Booy Sweeney

Booy got her start on Tumblr as a prolific writer of One Direction fan fiction, under a username she will not be sharing. Raised in St. Helena, California, she narrowly escaped becoming a townie by fleeing to Scripps College, where she earned a BA with a dual major in Media Studies and Creative Writing.

Before grad school, she came at the industry from every angle she could find: development under a producer with a colorful reputation, content marketing, set PA work, and three separate agency hiring processes, which she maintains should count as work experience. Each one showed her a different part of how stories get made, sold, and shot, and every one of them confirmed she wanted to be the person writing them.

Now an Annenberg Fellow and MFA candidate in USC’s Writing for Screen and Television program, Booy writes funny, sad stories about messy women and the families who made them that way. Her work blends comedy and drama, finding the absurd in the serious business of girlhood.

She interned with A24 and HBO on Season 2 of Neighbors, was a finalist in the 546 Script Competition, and is currently in USC’s CTPR 484: Single-Camera Comedy Production.

Her dream is to create a TV show with a fandom devoted enough to write fan fiction about it. She’ll be reading anonymously.
